Fur,
feather, scale requirements for workshop by
Ferrett
In this class you will be making a small sample of each of three
textures. You may choose to bind them and hang them on the wall
afterwards or just keep them for reference. They can be fantasy
colours, or realistic, it’s up to you. Feel free to play,
this is supposed to be fun.
• Sewing kit – sewing machine, including a hopping or
darning foot if you have one. Fabric scissors, both large and small.
Pins.
• Spray baste such as 505 spray
• 1metre calico, this will form the backing and foundation
of our work. If you would rather work with a coloured fabric, that
will be fine, but bear in mind it may show through light fabrics.
If you choose a black base fabric, white feathers would come out
looking grey on it.
• A piece of wadding about 40’’x20’’
or three pieces about 20’’x15’’. I recommend
a cotton polyester blend, either 80/20 or 50/50. These are thin
enough to fit under the machine easily and the cotton in them helps
grip the fabrics.
Fur
• A piece of fabric the colour you want to make your fur,
approximately 20’’x15’’. If you can find
a piece which has a print that looks like fur, so much the better.
Avoid fabrics with strong geometric shapes.
• Several threads in the same colours as your fabric. Ideally,
you would llike to have three or four shades of the colour and a
variegated thread. If you have more please do bring them.
Feather
• Two or three shades in one colour of fabric. Ombre fabrics,
hand dyes and cotton sateen are fantastic for feathers if you have
them. Total amount about 20’’x20’’.
• Threads to match your fabrics, again more choice is good,
so bring several if you have them.
Scale
• Two colours of scale fabric. We will be making some belly
scales and some top scales, which are often different colours. I
like blue belly scales with green top scales, but perhaps you fancy
something a bit more firey? Maybe yellow belly with a red top? The
belly colour needs to be about 10’’x10’’
and the top scales need about 15’’x20’’.
If you llike you can use several fabrics in the same colour for
the top scales. It’s a good way to use up scraps and will
give you a great texture.
• Threads to match the top scales and a thread that is a little
darker than the belly scales.
If you have any questions about this requirements list I can be
contacted at ferret@ferfab.co.uk or on 020 8861 6410. Looking forward
to seeing you all.
